This one, I hadn’t planned. It began with a short story contest. Usually, if someone tells me, “write a story about exactly this topic,” I’ll draw a complete blank. I can’t write on command. This time it was different. The parameters were, it had to fit the YA genre, and there had to be a girl named Alice and a white rabbit, whose presence somehow indicated the beginning of an adventure. One walk with the dog later, I had my story. When I wanted to submit it, I realized that the deadline I had been given was wrong, and I couldn’t submit anymore. So there I was, with a perfectly fine 4k-word short story, and no one to send it to.
You can probably guess what happened next. By that time, Alice had already become alive in my head. And before I knew it, I had a rough draft of a novel…
Many, many months of feedback, editing, and polishing later, I’m proud to say that I’ve managed to accomplish what I’ve already been accused of – I’ve written a YA novel.
I thought about maybe trying the trad route with this one again. I even went so far as to send it to one agent – who didn’t bother responding, which reminded me of all the myriad reasons I’m self-publishing. That way, the only rude person I have to deal with, is me.
(And btw., if life is too short to remove USB safely, it is certainly too short to wait for an agent’s reply.)
What sort of book is it? An urban fantasy, with a distinct romance element. Here’s what the blurb says:
Alice is a high school princess. Blonde. Beautiful. Shallow.
Until she meets a little white rabbit, and her world turns upside down. The line between reality and fantasy blurs, then vanishes alltogether.
And Alice becomes a girl who attracts Trouble. Trouble with a capital T.
Sneak peak possible? Sure. You can read the first three chapters for free on Wattpad.
Any other way to get a feeling for it? Watch the trailer on YouTube.
When will it be out? Well, I thought I might be all professional this time around, announce it way ahead, send out ARCs, advertize a bit…but, duh, I guess I’m still me, plus, see above on life being too short and stuff. So it’s going to be sometime tomorrow, depending on how quickly Amazon reacts.
Hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
